1st Place

Krzysztof Kolatorski

We’re congratulating Krzysztof Kolatorski for winning the first place!

Krzysztof about his entry:

“I created this project in 5 days after my daily work. In Blender, I used simple modeling techniques and some physics, cloth and hair simulation for building bricks, bedclothes, curtains and child hair.

The final image was done in Photoshop. I import all render layers (Diff, AO, Depth, Mist, Volume) and added some color correction, photography filter and LUT for a better, cinematic look. On top of that I add High Pass sharpening layer on the final image, what I recommend to use.

What I’ve learned? Simple physics, cloth and hair simulations in Blender, I used it for the first time.“

Created using Blender, Cycles, Affinity Designer and Photoshop.

What our jury says:

Cedric Van der Kelen: “great storytelling, set is nicely decorated and the lighting highlights the subject very nicely. If hair is not your strong suit, try to find a creative way of hiding the subject. Also, if the robot is reading the timer it should be mirrored for the audience. Great work!”

Gregory Smith: “There’s no part of this image which is without interest – it’s lively, descriptive of the character, and tied together with a unifying lighting palette. There’s so much narrative to read into the image too.”

Masha Bazueva: “Really love the color palette, details and the composition of this image. Also, there is a great storytelling that makes you understand boy’s tastes and the kind of relationship he has with his robot pet, that looks sad (or bored) while waiting for him to wake up. Really cute! I would dedicate some more time to the hair of the boy that look a bit unnatural.”

Ewa Wierbik: “I really like the idea of this artwork. Composition, lights and details look very good. One thing that might be improved is a hologram, I think it should be mirrored, but overall everything it is very clean and neat.”

Darko Vucenik: “Poor AI Dog, it is so hard to wait for his best bud to wake up. This image is chock-full of interesting details to look at. From the goldfish on the left, posters on the wall, various toys and gadgets to the funky lava lamp on the right. Robo dog design is simple and cute, very appropriate for a little kid’s toy. Lighting is very nice, focusing the viewer’s attention to the robot.”

Ken Liang: “Very cute robot you’ve got there! Really digging the stylized render of this very well visualized kid’s room. The wonderful soft lighting with its nice balance of warm and cool tones in this artwork creates such a nice and comforting feeling for the viewers. The choice of using a widescreen composition also makes it very cinematic.”

Martin Klekner: “Pixar-vibes all over, really love the lighting and composition on this one, as well as the stylization. Love how Krzysztof played with the lighting and what different parts of the room to point out with it. Amazing job, full of warm and cozy feeling :-)”

Amina Khan: “The most adorable master and pet! How the stylized theme has been carried out through the piece is inspiring. A lovely blend of creative and predictive.”

2nd Place

Jazib Daud

We’re congratulating Jazib Daud for winning the second place!

Jazib about his entry:

“After a catastrophic event on the planet, Martha lost the Dragon. Now finally the gloomy era came to an end and both of them reunite…hugging and watching the sun shine once again.

It took almost a week to make this render. The biggest thing I learned was skin texturing and… yes, Blender “Filmic” color management node. It was super useful to achieve a nice extent of realism.

Software I used are ZBrush for modeling, 3D Coat for texturing, Marvelous Designer for the clothes, Blender for scene setup and rendering, Photoshop for final dust fx and composite…“

Created using Blender, ZBrush, 3D Coat and Photoshop.

What our jury says:

Lukas Walzer: “I just love how painterly this feels, despite the Sci-Fi subject. The pose and the models are citing Da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” which is great and works just fine with the solid modeling and texturing.”

Gregory Smith: “A lot of narrative in this entry; it’s a complex subject, but encompassed by a strong design that makes for a readable and striking image.”

Masha Bazueva: “I really love the tragedy kind feeling that conveys in this artwork. It makes you wonder about what happened to this girl and her robot. The composition, color and subjects detail are greatly done. Also, don’t know if it’s something done on purpose, but it really reminds me of a classic painting “Lady and Ermine” and I really love futuristic versions of classic operas! Great work!”

Ewa Wierbik: “I really like the idea of this artwork. Composition, lights and details look very good. One thing that might be improved is a hologram, I think it should be mirrored, but overall everything it is very clean and neat.”

Ken Liang: “Very interesting juxtaposition in this portrait piece. It’s a very mysterious looking duo that makes me wanna find out more and look at the smaller details. Nevertheless, this is a very cool robot design. The choice of colors also compliments towards the overall mood of the artwork here.”

3rd Place

Sybren Westendorp

We’re congratulating Sybren Westendorp for receiving the third place!

Sybren about his entry:

“Say hi to Sammy, a model GRP-113 robopup.

I read the other day that a lot of puppies are being returned or abandoned, now that the lockdown is coming towards an end. This gave me the idea to try and visually express that pets are not toys that you can just throw away when you are bored of them.

My first step was to use greyboxing to try out some poses for the dog. Then I started playing with the lighting to get a rough idea of the lighting setup that I was aiming for. After this it was sculpting, modelling and texturing. My goal for this project was to experiment with fur in Blender, because I love to draw animals, but I’ve had no experience yet with modelling them.”

Created using Blender, Substance Painter and Affinity Photo.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Lukas Walzer: “Excellent work on the grooming here! Lighting and Depth of Field have been used to great effect here, making clear that you knew perfectly well about the strengths of this image!”

Gregory Smith: “This is a really wonderful entry – very endearing and relatable. It’s so clearly conveyed that this is a pet, not just a mechanical animal, with subtle but effective cues to signal that the dog is a robot. The composition, palette, and expression all work together to communicate clearly.”

Marius Iatan: “If the T-800 had a cute dog, this would be it. Very nice model and details, including the fur. The electronics look good as well, and the character as a whole looks ‘right’. Nice job!”

Aidy Burrows: “Great enthused wide-eyed expression here, and the story beneath works well, it’s hard to know whether to be soothed or frightened with the makeshift wiring and missing skin, though it helps to reveal the true nature and create that intriguing story.”

Darko Vucenik: “Terminator never look so cute as in this doggy form. Happy, expectant look on his face is wonderfully done. The fur looks so soft and pettable and the level of damage, revealing robotic interior is well-balanced. Just enough to make the character interesting but not so much as to make him look grotesque instead of cute.”

Honorable Mention

Benedicto Budee Mendoza

We’re congratulating Benedicto Budee Mendoza for receiving an honorable mention!

Benedicto about his entry:

“MechaMouse. Mathew and his older brother Ethan both have a pet. Mathew had a mouse and Ethan have a large snake. One afternoon after Mathew gets back from camping, Ethan is asking whether he saw his pet snake. After realizing that his pet is in trouble, he quickly rushes to his room to check and to his surprise, he found out the secret of his pet mouse.

Created all in Blender 3.0 and render in Cycles X, with 5000 samples, didn’t apply denoising for a natural grain effect. Added the flare, dusts and vignette in Photoshop for the finishing touches.”

Created using Blender, Cycles and Photoshop.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Aidy Burrows: “Love the story in this one, the wrong mouse was fed to the snake here it would seem! Simple environment but very efficient, great work!”

Masha Bazueva: “The mouse that usually is a prey for a snake, finally can defend himself. Very nice! I like the composition and how the animals were done, very realistic. Also, love the details like the dust particles in the air. “

Christoph Werner: “I love the nice light mood and telling the story in this scene. Really a cinematic result. Thumbs up!”

Martin Klekner: “Very nice mood on this one, also, I like the idea of a reversed predator-prey role. The robo-mouse model is perfect! The background environment could use more detail in my opinion, nevertheless, this is an awesome render!”

Honorable Mention

Pankaj Deka

We’re congratulating Pankaj Deka for receiving an honorable mention!

Pankaj about his entry:

“The main concept of this artwork is inspired by a famous science fiction novel of Jules Verne, “Steam House”. In this book the author wrote about a mechanical elephant operated by steam called “Behemoth”. This mechanical elephant was so big that humans could live inside it.

The main subject of my artwork is a cyberpunk interpretation of “Behemoth”. In my artwork I have put my main subject a robotic elephant in a nature scene. This pet robot can be seen with its owner in the scene.

At first, I modeled the elephant in Blender and created the surrounding scene. Then I rendered it and post processed it in Photoshop to enhance the colors and the overall look. This whole process took about one week.“

Created using Blender 2.90, Photoshop.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Ozana Nemčanin: “Gentle Giant :). Love the use of color here, and the design of the elephant is capturing.”

Marius Iatan: “The weathered look of the elephant fits well with the environment. There is a sense of power as well, and the human connection is a nice touch in the scene.”

Ewa Wierbik: “I like the colors and the mood. It’s like it is from a kids book, from a fairy tale about human – robotic pet friendship. Overall, render has a small contrast, but it definitely tells a story.”

Amina Khan: “The choice of pet, the ambience, the blend of media.. I love it at all! Dusk time details are right on pat.“
